Grocery & Voucher Store Open

Apr 09, 2020

Charles Online Store is now open

In light of the current circumstances, we are all as businesses and as individuals, forced to adapt and evolve by stepping out of our comfort zones.

From what originally began as a small café in 2016 with 4 staff members, growing into a fully fledged service team of 22 employees, four years down the line we have been reminded of how quickly things can change and are once again back to a basic team.

COVID-19 has brought the entire restaurant industry to its knees, like an unsuspecting rugby tackle, we are having to pick ourselves up from the dirt, dust ourselves off, and keep on going to be able to support our team and an uncertain future.

We are extremely fortunate to have received our essentials service provider permit and will be able to keep the gas plates burning, so to speak, by preparing home-style cooked ready meals for your convenience and providing nutritious fruits, vegetables and other much needed pantry items ie. honey, eggs, bread, cheese, chocolate etc. straight to your doorstep. We will initiate with a collections service at 137 Waterkant Street, with door-to-door deliveries to follow soon. By supporting us, in turn we all assist in supporting our small local suppliers, keeping our local economy intact.

Head Chef Shaun Dampies will be cooking solo, for the moment, with packaging and logistics by café owners Justine and Mark. Our small team is aware of the strict health and safety regulations and will be participating in maximum hygiene protocols when dealing with food items:
  • washing hands regularly
  • cleaning and sanitising work spaces continuously
  • using latex gloves and protective face gear when required
  • washing fruit and vegetables meticulously
  • sanitising products from suppliers as they are delivered
You can be assured that all meals and other food items will be handled with the utmost love, care, and protection right up until your doorstep!

To support our staff and the café we included a voucher and donation section in our online grocery shop. You have the choice of supporting in three different ways:
  • Support our team members directly by donating to the Cafe Charles Staff Welfare Fund. We are raising funds to ensure that our staff have some security during these unprecedented time. 100% of the funds will be distributed equally amongst all staff members.
  • We also added a digital gift card. This gift card can be used as payment for any products we have in the Charles Online Store. You can also purchase a digital gift card and forward it to your loved ones or someone you would like to support.
  • Another voucher we added to the online shop can be used post lockdown for food and beverage purchases at our Café in the beautiful De Waterkant neighbourhood. These are currently available at a special Easter lockdown discount of 20%, after the Easter weekend the vouchers will be available at a 15% discount until the lockdown ends. Follow us on social media, we will be publishing the discount codes this afternoon on the following channels:
We look forward to sharing our good, healthy, comfort food with you!

Should you have any queries, please contact us at shop@charles.capetown.

Be safe. Stay well.

About Catherine Marshall Wines is the first eponymous range in South Africa to be released by a woman winemaker. What began as a festive three-barrel foot stomp event attended by a handful of friends on a south peninsula beach in 1996, produced a very palatable Syrah, and saw the founding in 1997 of the first true micro-winery in the Western Cape with Pinot Noir the focus. The aptly named Barefoot Wine Company trading as Catherine Marshall Wines has long outgrown its humble origins to become a legendary institution and exporting to most wine consumer destinations world- wide. After scouring vineyards throughout the Western Cape, the decision was made in 2007 to source all grapes from cool climate Elgin and to craft both red and white wines with a fresh, bright and aromatic profile. The grapes destined for the range are selected from reputable growers in the Elgin and Hemel-en-Aarde Valleys, Stellenbosch and Swartland. The range includes Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Grenache and a Merlot/ Cabernet Franc blend. Cathy heads up vineyard selection, wine production, marketing and sales whilst Greg Mitchell supports the behind- the- scenes business side of the Company. Jonathan Oxenham, Cathy’s son, helps in the cellar during the harvest season. MENU RIESLING 2021 SANDSTONE PINOT NOIR 2020 CLAY SOIL PINOT NOIR 2021 PETER'S VISION 2017 GRENACHE 2021

About Over the years the Colmant brand, quality and reputation has grown from strength to strength. Always in search of the perfect bubble, exciting new changes happened at Colmant Cap Classique and Champagne at the start of 2019 with the announcement that Paul Gerber, one of South Africa’s leading Cap Classique makers, had joined the team as winemaker. Paul has come with a wealth of knowledge and shares Jean-Philippe Colmant’s passion of striving to produce the finest boutique Cap Classique in South Africa, with balance, elegance and finesse. Colmant’s Cap Classiques reflect the terroir of the Western Cape regions showing ripeness and fullness but still retaining freshness and balance, exclusively using the traditional champagne varietals of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in their production process, more or less in equal proportions. Colmant select their grapes from different sites, according to the specific characteristics of each terroir, ensuring that there are enough components to work with to make a base wine with maximum complexity. Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes contribute their own specific qualities, without which complete balance and harmony would not be possible. Colmant source their Pinot Noir grapes from versatile origins, coming from five different farms located between Franschhoek, Robertson and Elgin, all of which offer their own distinct desirable characteristics of body and finesse. Chardonnay brings finesse, life, freshness and elegance and its slow development gives an ideal ageing potential. Out of the Chardonnay grapes Colmant use, over 50% are grown by on the Colmant Farm, where the soil provides a perfect balance between full structure and a level of acidity that brings freshness and vivacity. The remainder of their Chardonnay comes from the limestone soils of Robertson and Bonnievale as well as the cooler climate of Elgin and Hemel-en-Aarde.
