They say, “if it excites you and scares you at the same time, it probably means you should do it!”
Which is why I’m delighted to share my journey with you. Since my tenure as Cellarmaster of Still Wines at Graham Beck Wines came to an end, I have been busy forging a unique new identity and establishing my labour of love – ERIKA OBERMEYER WINES. This has been an extraordinary exercise in courage, tenacity, creativity and patience – but worth every single moment and all the blood, sweat and tears.
Drawing on my extensive training and rewarding career as a winemaker and marketer with invaluable experience locally and abroad at some of the world’s top cellars, I took a leap of faith and started my own label in 2016.
The diversity of the South African winelands is the cornerstone on which I build my winemaking philosophy, producing wines true to their origin. By sourcing and selecting special vineyard sites across the Western Cape winelands, and pairing them with the most suitable varieties, I have created wines that embody the best of these distinctive regions.
My intention is to craft wines with freshness, elegance and finesse –where we build on natural acidity and grape tannin and don’t rely on countless additions, manipulations or excessive oaking. It’s about adhering to the basics and constant, meticulous attention to detail.
The ERIKA OBERMEYER WINES portfolio consists of:
This selected range of hand-crafted, terroir specific wines deliver wines with flavour, complexity, structure and excellent cellaring potential. The wines are refreshing, beautifully balanced and well-suited to food.
I’ve always maintained the following “ingredients” are essential in the art of crafting a fine wine: true terroir, balance, honesty and a light touch. They tell a rich and deeply fascinating story of a time, a place, and a maker. I truly hope you enjoy the wines as much as I relish and appreciate the extraordinary “soul journey” they have taken me on.
